Taught by active filmmakers this course consists of a mix of theoretical and practical documentary modules. There is one module in which students have been able to choose another media related module ranging from coding to activist media practice.


The course can be taken full or part time, this years show features films from both full and part time students. 


Students have learnt to:


  • Communicate imaginatively through the moving image
  • Research and write original non-fiction film
  • Develop visual story-telling
  • Shoot and edit
  • Project manage, schedule, budget, distribute and fund-raise.

Throughout the course students have made one 6 minute documentary and one 10 minute documentary. Students could choose to complete other documentaries or video essays in some modules as opposed to written essays and some may have chosen a video project for their optional module. For their final module students could choose between submitting a film and an essay or submitting a dissertation. This student documentary show will feature the work of those students who have decided to complete a 20 minute film for their final module.

This MA is designed for students who have a passion for news, current affairs, documentary or any aspect of factual programme-making. It offers a practical training in, and critical engagement with, journalism and documentary-making.

Students have learnt how to:

  • Create informed and engaging journalism – for print or radio and tv (off or online) – to a professional standard
  • Develop your visual and verbal storytelling
  • Research, shoot and edit documentaries about the topics that interest you most
  • Project manage, schedule, budget and distribute your documentary work
  • Contextualise your practice through critical study of current media developments.

This course was available as either full or part time, this year both full and part time students will be screening their final projects. Throughout the course students have had the chance to create their own documentaries as well as news packages on various platforms. For their final project students could choose between creating a journalism dissertation or a 20 minute documentary and an accompanying essay. The final projects of those students who choose to make a film will be screened as part of this degree show.
